Paris Olympics: Smoked Out! Japanese Teen Gymnast Out of Squad for Drinking and Smoking Admission
A significant blow to Japan's women's artistic gymnastics team as their 19-year-old captain Shoko Miyata has withdrawn from the Paris 2024 Olympics. The decision came on Friday after Miyata admitted to smoking and drinking activities prohibited for individuals under 20 in Japan.
The Japan Gymnastics Association (JGA) held a press conference to announce Miyata’s withdrawal. According to the JGA, Miyata admitted on Thursday to having smoked and consumed alcohol once each since late June.

These incidents occurred after she returned to Tokyo from the team’s training base in Monaco. The allegations came to light after the JGA received related information on Monday, prompting an investigation.
The inquiry substantiated the violations, confirming that Miyata had indeed engaged in smoking and drinking.
With Miyata's withdrawal, the Japanese women's gymnastics team will compete with only four athletes instead of the usual five at the Paris Olympics. This unexpected turn of events is a significant setback for the team, which had high hopes of securing a medal. The last time Japan's women's gymnastics team won a team medal at the Olympics was during the 1964 Tokyo Games.
Miyata, who won a bronze medal at the 2022 World Championships in Liverpool, was expected to lead a young team of debutant Olympians and teenagers. She secured her spot for the Paris Olympics 2024 in May by winning her third consecutive NHK Trophy.
The JGA and her Juntendo University team will interview her upon her return to Japan to further address the situation.
Official Apologies and Reactions
JGA President Tadashi Fujita, along with other officials, expressed deep regret over the incident.
"We apologize from the bottom of our hearts for this," Fujita said during the press conference with the media.
Miyata's personal coach, Mutsumi Harada, also attended the press conference and shared his perspective on the matter. Harada acknowledged Miyata's reckless behavior but also highlighted the immense pressure she faced.
"She was spending her days really burdened with so much pressure. I would implore people to understand that," said Harada.
The incident has broader implications beyond the immediate impact on the team’s performance. It underscores the intense pressure and scrutiny faced by young athletes.
Mental health issues have increasingly come to the forefront in sports, with high-profile athletes like Simone Biles bringing attention to the subject. Biles withdrew from several competitions during the Tokyo Olympics, citing mental health concerns, which sparked a global conversation about the well-being of athletes.
Artistic gymnastics remains one of the most popular events at the Summer Olympics, with the Paris 2024 Games scheduled to host the competition from July 27 to August 5. The absence of a key figure like Miyata will undoubtedly affect the dynamics of the competition and the Japanese team's chances
