India's Anirban in the lead, Jasjeet placed third after first round
Karambunai (Malaysia), May 18 (UNI) India's Anirban Lahiri shot one-under 69 and his compatriot Jasjeet Singh carded two-over 72 to be placed first and third respectively after the first round of the 105th Malaysian amateur Golf here today.
In team event India led by five strokes over Australia.
It turned out to be a demanding first round for 123 players as they teed off on a hot humid day at the picturesque Nexus Golf Resort here.
Doha Asian Games silver medalist Anirban Lahiri rose to the occasion to card a one-under-par 69 at the 6,112-metre Ronald Fream designed course.
Anirban made a birdie on the 149-metre, par 3 fifth hole against a costly double-bogey on the 432-metre, par 4 ninth hole.
Trying to shake of his nerves after the double-bogey, the Indian started the 10th with a bogey.
However, the 19-year-old from Bangalore immediately recovered with a superb birdie at the next hole, a par 4 measuring 421 metres.
He then produced two marvelous birdie putts on the 16th and 17th holes to end his day for the clubhouse lead.
Just behind India's number one amateur was Australia's Ray Beaufils at even-par 70.
Beaufils produced four birdies on the first, fifth, sixth and 17th, but an equal number of bogeys at the third, eighth, ninth and 15th cost him the lead.
Singapore's Goh Kun Yang, veteran Malaysian amateur Kalana Ibrahim from Sarawak, India's Jasjeet Singh and Philippines' Michael Peter Alejandro were tied for third at two-over-par 72.
