Indian sport needs winners, good winners: Vijay Amirtraj

Chennai, Jan 12 (UNI) ''We need winners and good winners at that," former India Davis Cup captain Vijay Amritraj said here today.

Vijay was speaking as the guest of honour at the silver jubilee function of the Triangle Tennis Trust, imparting training to 300 aspiring talents in the age group of 4 to 16.

By good winners he meant developing good temperament, win or loss. "There is a John McEnroe and there is Bjorn Borg," Vijay said to the budding talents, to drive home the point of sportsmanship.

Vijay also exhorted the parents of the trainees at TTT that children who take to sport should not be pressurised to achieve and put through strenuous sessions at the gym.

"Unless a boy's physique is able to accept it, he would be injury prone," he cautioned.

Vijay, who is also the UN Ambassador for Peace, drove home the point that children have to take to some sport. "Sports play a big role in bringing different people together. Only sport is universal language," he observed.

If you strike it well in sport, it carries into your profession, the articulate sporting idol added.
