Indian Airlines defeat BSF Jalandhar to lift Beighton Cup
Kolkata, Apr 10 (UNI) Brilliant stickwork from Dhanraj Pillay helped Indian Airlines lift the coveted All India Beighton Cup defeating BSF Jalandhar 1-0 in the final at the Mohan Bagan ground here today.
Olympian Pillay, captaining Indian Airlines, made a blistering move in the 34th minute which caught Jalandhar goalkeeper K M Subbaiah off guard, thus enusring the solitary goal for Indian Airlines.
The win gave Indian Airlines the oldest hockey trophy of the country for the second time after 1985.
BSF Jalandhar, winner of four times out of the eight final appearances, tried their best to equalise but the Indian Airlines defence proved too good for them.
While Indian Airlines was awarded Rs 1 lakh as cash prize and a trophy, BSF Jalandhar received Rs 50,000 for their runners-up effort.
Pillay received Rs 5000 for being the best forward in the tournament.
