India to play world group play-off in Romania
New Delhi, May 24 (UNI) India's Davis Cup team has been drawn against fourth ranked Romania in the World Group play-off away from home that will be held from September 19-21.
The winning team will secure a place in the 2009 World Group, while the losing side will compete in their respective zonal Group I competitions.
The tie will be played at Clubul Sportiv Progresul, Bucuresti Stadium in Romania.
Earlier, India defeated Uzbekistan and then Japan to make it to the play-off round.
While India reached the play-off round for the first time since 2005, Romania have made it to the play-offs for the third successive year.
The visitors, ranked 24, do not have of a good record against Romania as the two sides have met three times with India winning only once in 1922.
In 1971, when India hosted Romania, the visitors won 4-1 and before that in 1992 in Bucharest the home team swept to a 4-0 victory.
India's only win came in Beckenham, England, where they blanked the Romanians 5-0.
