India down Malaysia in Asian junior women basketball tourney

New Delhi, Jan 29 (UNI) Captain Kiranjit kaur inspired India to a 71-67 victory over Malaysia in their opening match of the 18th FIBA Asian Basketball Championship for Junior Women in Bangkok today.

Kaur was the pick of the Indians in the Level II outing, scoring excellent points on offensive rebounds. Team-mates Raspreet Sidhu, Pushpa Maddo Pushpa and Akanksha Singh supported their skipper well to carve out a well-deserved win in a closely-fought match, according to a Basketball Federation of India release.

India play Hong Kong tomorrow and their last match on February 3.

Other teams in the fray in Level II are Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Indonesia and Kazakhstan.

The winner of Level II will have the chance to compete in Level I which is also being held in Bangkok with China, Korea, Japan, Chinese Taipei, Thailand and Singapore participating.
