Hoggard ruled out, England announce unchanged eleven

London, July 24 (UNI) Matthew Hoggard has been ruled out of the second Test even as England, bouyed by a near-match winning show at the series opener at Lord's, announced an unchanged squad for the Trent Bridge tie against India starting on Friday.

The paceman, recuperating from a back injury, missed the opening Test at Lord's.

''We did not consider Matthew Hoggard for this Test match on cricketing grounds. He is making progress in his recovery from a back injury and came through a preliminary fitness test at the ECB National Cricket Centre today,'' Chairman of selectors David Graveney said.

''He will be reassessed tomorrow to see if there is any response to today's test and no decision has yet been made as to whether he will be available for domestic cricket later this week.'' Meanwhile, all 11 players who featured in the first Test have been included, together with the Leicestershire pace bowler Stuart Broad, according to the ECB.

Broad is to be the nominated standby bowler for this Test match and will be released to play for Leicestershire against Glamorgan in the LV County Championship match starting tomorrow before joining up with England on Thursday evening.

''There were many positive aspects to our performance in the first Test and we were particularly impressed by the efforts of our inexperienced bowling attack against high quality opposition,'' Graveney said.

''They bowled well as a unit and the challenge now will be for them to maintain the same levels of consistency at Nottingham,'' he added.

England squad for second npower Test: Michael Vaughan (captain), James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Ian Bell, Paul Collingwood, Alastair Cook, Kevin Pietersen, Matthew Prior, Monty Panesar, Ryan Sidebottom, Andrew Strauss, Chris Tremlett.
