Henin safely through to German Open quarters

BERLIN, May 11 (Reuters) World number one Justine Henin of Belgium reached the quarter-finals of the German Open today, beating unseeded Italian Maria Elena Camerin 6-1 6-3 in their rain-delayed, third-round match.

Henin, the top seed and a three-time winner here, must play Serbian fifth seed Jelena Jankovic later today after rain earlier in the week created a backlog of matches.

The French Open champion took just over an hour to see off Camerin, pinning the Italian to the back of the court with her booming groundstrokes and breaking her five times.

Wimbledon champion Amelie Mauresmo, back in action after a two-month layoff, was set to continue her match against unseeded Ukrainian Julia Vakulenko later today.

Their tie was suspended late yesterday with Mauresmo, the number two seed and twice Berlin champion, leading 6-2 1-1. The winner will play Russian Dinara Safina later today.

Defending champion Nadia Petrova of Russia, a former French Open semi-finalist and the seventh seed in Berlin, takes on compatriot and third seed Svetlana Kuznetsova in today's quarter-finals.

Serbian teenager Ana Ivanovic plays Patty Schnyder, who knocked out fellow Swiss Martina Hingis yesterday.
