Giannis Antetokounmppo Uncertain About Bucks Future Amid Communication Tensions
Giannis Antetokounmpo is leaving every option open over a future with the Milwaukee Bucks, yet recent comments show clear frustration with internal communication and decision-making after a 32-50 campaign ended with a 126-106 defeat to the Philadelphia 76ers and confirmation that coach Doc Rivers will not return next season.
Asked whether that loss might be Antetokounmpo’s final appearance for Milwaukee, the two-time NBA MVP did not give a direct answer. Instead, Antetokounmpo stressed uncertainty over what comes next for both the franchise and personal future, while pointing to issues with how information moves within the organisation and how decisions are taken above the playing group.

Antetokounmpo explained that no contract proposal is currently on the table, even though decisions over the roster and coaching staff will shape the Bucks’ direction over the coming months. Asked specifically about an extension, Antetokounmpo replied: "We'll see when we get there. We have [several] months [until then], it's a long time. But somebody has to offer you that, for you to sign. I haven't been offered an extension. So, if that is on the table, then I will try to make the best decision for me and my family. But if it's not on the table, then I have to focus on how can I improve my worth and get on the floor and do what I do."
Earlier, Antetokounmpo was asked if the Philadelphia game could be the last in a Bucks uniform. Antetokounmpo answered: "That's a very good question. I don't know. It's not up to me. We'll see. I feel like sometimes people just don't listen. They listen to the sources. The main source is me. It is what it is. So again, do not disturb on my phone, go about my day, improve, and come back better."
Communication remains a major theme in Antetokounmpo’s comments. Antetokounmpo underlined the need for dialogue to operate in both directions, not just from players. Antetokounmpo said: "I'm very big on communication. I've always been open, but I don't know if it's got to go both ways. It has to go both ways. That cannot go one way." Reports during the season suggested the Bucks were open to exploring potential trades involving Antetokounmpo, adding extra tension around those communication concerns.
A key source of frustration for Antetokounmpo came from the return-to-play process after injury. Antetokounmpo believed full health had been reached earlier, yet clearance to play did not arrive. Antetokounmpo said: "From my understanding, coming back to play, which I don't think I ever had any return-to-play protocol, but to my understanding was I had to play 3-on-3 to be able to be available to play," and added that this requirement had been met more than once.
Antetokounmpo then strongly rejected any suggestion that practice had been declined. Antetokounmpo stated: "I did that multiple times. I've never in my life denied participation of practice. I don't know who said that, who came up with that, but that's disrespectful towards what I've done for this team and the way I carry myself my whole career, pretty much. But I did what I was supposed to do. I wasn't able to come on the court now. Who has that say? It probably comes from my boss, probably comes from the members of the front office or the owners. So, I thought I had control, kind of like, 'OK, if I'm healthy, I'm going to play.' But this shows me that not just me, just players in general, don't have no control. We got to do what we've been told. So, to answer your question, no. I didn't feel like I had control."
Giannis Antetokounmpo, Milwaukee Bucks record and outlook
Milwaukee’s overall performance adds context to Antetokounmpo’s remarks. The Bucks finished 32-50 and placed 11th in the Eastern Conference, missing the playoffs and falling far below recent seasons. The final loss to Philadelphia capped a campaign where defensive issues, injuries and change on the bench combined to expose gaps in the roster and structure.

Antetokounmpo gave a blunt assessment of where Milwaukee stands in the conference race. Antetokounmpo said: "We're very bad. We are the furthest away that we've been in the last couple of years. This is the second-lowest wins I've ever [had]. So yeah, we're the furthest away that we've been, I think. This is what we have in front of us."
Antetokounmpo admitted surprise at how quickly the situation has changed since the previous year and avoided predicting what the next season might bring. Antetokounmpo said: "I didn't think we're going to be in this position last year, so I don't know what position we're going to be next year. So, if everything goes well, hopefully, the Bucks want me here, why not? But if they don't? OK."
