Ghei sixth after record final round in Johnnie Walker Classic Golf
Phuket, Thailand, Mar 4 (UNI) Gaurav Ghei shot an eagle-two in the first hole and finished off with 40-footer birdie to card a course record-equalling eight-under-64 as he jumped from 50th to tied sixth on the final day of the Johnnie Walker Classic here today.
Twenty-year-old South African Anton Haig (71) walked away with the overall title in a three-way play-off to become the youngest winner of the event, eclipsing Tiger Woods who was 22 when he won the event in 1998.
Ghei, the winner of the Mercuries Masters last year, shot six birdies and an eagle in a flawless round.
''I shot a 63 at Hong Kong Golf Club a few years back. To shoot a 64 at a course like Blue Canyon and to tie the record on the final round is fantastic.
''I'm just absolutely delighted with the round, I don't really care where I finish. I can just sit back and enjoy a nice cold beer and enjoy watching the golf. I'm happy,'' said Ghei.
Haig, winner of Pulai Springs Malaysian Masters last year, pocketed 409,000 dollars, the biggest cheque of his career, besides an exemption on the European Tour till 2009 end.
Among other Indians, Jeev Milkha Singh (74) had a disappointing back nine, where he shot three bogeys and a double in the last six holes to finish tied 25th at four-under 284.
