Garcia win would give big lift to Spanish golf - Seve
CARNOUSTIE, Scotland, July 22 (Reuters) A Sergio Garcia British Open win later today would provide a vital boost for Spanish golf, according to Seve Ballesteros.
''It would mean a lot and put golf very much on top of the other sports in Spain,'' the five-times major winner told the BBC.
''It would bring the attention of the whole of the Spanish people to the game and would really make golf grow much bigger.'' The 50-year-old Ballesteros, who announced his retirement in an emotional news conference at Carnoustie tomorrow, said he had been impressed this week with Garcia, who tees off at 1420 local time (1320) with a three-shot lead over Steve Stricker.
''I've been watching the last three rounds and it seems he is swinging the club very well,'' said the 1979, 1984 and 1988 Open champion.
''He is very tranquil, he is not making any silly mistakes and he's keeping his nerve. The cup is very much in his hands.'' REUTERS BJR KP1921
