Garcia on verge of breakthrough in a major
CARNOUSTIE, Scotland, July 22 (Reuters) Sergio Garcia stood on the verge of his first major title at the British Open on Sunday, taking a three-shot advantage into the final round.
Second-placed American Steve Stricker looked the only man likely to challenge Garcia, who led on nine-under 204 after a third-round 68.
The rest of the field lagged at least six shots off the pace after the Spaniard played virtually flawless golf at Carnoustie, arguably the toughest links on the Open circuit.
Should Garcia, 27, win, he would become the first European since Briton Paul Lawrie triumphed in a playoff the last time the event was held here eight years ago.
World number one Tiger Woods, hunting three consecutive Open titles, was eight adrift of Garcia.
The 31-year-old American has not won any of his 12 majors coming from behind on the final day.
Among seven players sharing third place on 210 were 2002 champion Ernie Els and American Chris DiMarco, who was runner-up to Woods at Hoylake last year.
