Finally Vishy crowned World No. 1

New Delhi, Apr 2 (UNI) Viswanathan Anand's best moment in his long career came today after he was crowned new world number one though not before FIDE re-issued the ranking chart on protest by All India Chess Federation (AICF).

FIDE issued a quaterly ranking list on Saturday without considering the result of Morelia-Linares Super Grandmaster tournament which Anand won and it had shown Bulgarian Veselin Topalov topping the chart with 2,791 points, 13 ahead Anand (2,778).

The cut-off date for April rankings was February 28 and Morelia-Linares event ended on March 10. But, for the past 15 years the result of this event was included in counting for April list.

The AICF had to intervene and asked FIDE to rate this event ''as done in the past 15 or more years.'' ''The Linares tournament has traditionally been included in all rating lists published by FIDE in April and excluding it this time will be injustice to Indian chess and Viswanathan Anand,'' the Indian federation had said in a letter.

The media had reported after Anand's Morelia-Linares win that he would take over the crown from Topalov, who finished eighth in the tournament. But, the Indian Grandmaster was denied that honour though only for less than two days.

Today, a new ranking was re-issued and Anand was shown on the top with 2786 --a gain of eight points for the Morelia-Linares win, while Topalov finished second with 2772, according to information received here.

Krishnan Sasikiran remained the second highest-ranked Indian at 25th with 2690 points to his kitty, while Pentala Harikrishna (2650) was at 57th.

In the women's rankings, top Indian player Koneru Humpy retained her second position with 2575 rating points -- a gain of eight points from January rankings -- to her credit behind Hungary's Judit Polgar (2727) who is rated 13th in all player (men and women) rankings.
