Ex-champions GNDU Amritsar off to flying start
Varanasi, Jan 9 (UNI) Former champions Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Amritsar got off to a flying start as they beat Madurreather 5-1 on the first day of All India Inter University Hockey tournament here today, The Amritsat team led 4-0 at the breather.
Among other group matches, Punjabi University (Patiala) blanked Deen Dayal Upadhyaya University (Gorakhpur) by three goals in a Group D clash, while Annamalai University pipped Sambalpur University 4-3 in their first Group C encounter.
In another gripping clash, Gurukul Kangdi University (Hardwar) went down fighting to Rajasthan University, Jaipur (2-3) in a Group A clash.
Two encounters -- Barkatullah University (Bhopal) against Jamia Millia (New Delhi) in Group C (2-2) and Madras University against Jabalpur University in Group D (1-1) ended in drab draws.
Hosts Banaras Hindu University (BHU) take on Gurukul Kangdi in their first Group A encounter tomorrow, while last year's runners up Mahatama Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith (MGKV), Varanasi start off their campaign against Madurai Kamaraj University.
