Evening sports centres to come up in Punjab's schools

Kapurthala, Oct 18 (UNI) In a bid to woo young students towards sports activities, the Punjab Education Department is setting up evening sports centres in schools, Education Minister Upinderjit Kaur said here today.

''Teachers who motivate students to take part in these evening sports centres would be given special weightage in their annual confidential report,'' the Minister said after inaugurating the 54th Punjab State Sports for Kabaddi and Throw Ball at the Guru Nanak Stadium.

More than one thousand students from 20 districts of the state are participating in this competition being held for Under-17 and 19 boys and girls.

The Education Minister further said under the new sports policy of the government, a provision had been made to construct hostels for sportspersons in schools and colleges. In this district, one of such hostels was nearing completion at Tibba village, she added.

The government has also enhanced the diet money from Rs 50 to Rs 70 for the sportspersons.
