East Zone Sainik School Sports Championship starts at Imphal
Imphal, July 29 (UNI) The East Zone Sainik Schools Sports and Co-curricular Activities, 2007, has started amid great fanfare at the Sainik School here.
The formal inauguration of the meet was held yesterday, with State Minister of Education, Transport and Sericulture L Jayanta Kurnar Singh and MLA Y Surchandra Singh as Chief Guest and president respectively at the function.
Altogether, three Sainik Schools from the Eastern region, namely Sainik School Purulia (West Bengal), Goalpara (Assam) and the host School Imphal participate in the Championship.
A total of 150 cadets participated in various sports and co-curricular events both at Junior and Sub-Junior categories.
Chief Guest L Jayanta Kumar Singh, in his inaugural address, expressed happiness to be amongst the young and energetic cadets from the Sainik Schools of Eastern sector of the country, displaying their extraordinary skills.
The minister assured that the amount of scholarship presently given by the state government to the cadets would be increased and hoped that the school would continue flying its flag very high.
Earlier, the school NCC Contingent presented a Guard of Honour to the minister on his arrival in the school. Later, he inaugurated a Language Training Laboratory recently developed by the school. He also placed a wreath at the Martyrs' Pillar.
MLA Y Surchandra Singh expressed his happiness to be amongst the cadets of various sainik schools. He said he had been associated with the school for the last 15 years and appreciated the school for achieving cent per cent performance in the CBSE examinations. He also congratulated the school for not being affected by the frequent bandhs and strikes in the state. The MLA promised to extend all possible help to the School.
The inaugural match in Football (Junior) was played between Sainik School, Imphal and Sainik School, Goalpara, in which Imphal won the match by 5-0, while in the Sub-Junior category, Imphal defeated Goalpara by 8-0. Again, in Basketball, Sainik School, Imphal defeated Sainik School, Purulia by 60-15.
