Dillon Brooks Acknowledges Targeting Steph Curry's Injured Thumb During Playoff Match
Dillon Brooks has addressed claims that he deliberately targeted Steph Curry's injured thumb during the Houston Rockets' 131-116 victory over the Golden State Warriors. Brooks played a crucial role for the Rockets, helping push the series to Game 6 in San Francisco. He scored 24 points, making seven out of 13 shots, while defensively containing Curry and Jimmy Butler alongside Amen Thompson.
During the first quarter, Curry expressed frustration when no foul was called after contact from Brooks on a three-point attempt. Curry's thumb injury has been a persistent issue this season. Despite playing with it wrapped and icing it post-game, Curry insists it hasn't affected his performance. Brooks responded to accusations from the Warriors' broadcast about targeting Curry's thumb by saying, "If I had an injured ankle, I would attack that ankle every single time. So whatever they’re saying on the broadcast, they can keep saying it."

The strategy seemed effective as Curry managed only 13 points in 24 minutes. Draymond Green acknowledged the focus on Curry, stating, "I think it's pretty obvious, but it is what it is. I'm not one to come to cry to you about what the league should do." Meanwhile, Warriors coach Steve Kerr refrained from blaming players for exploiting any advantage within the rules but urged for rule adjustments next season.
Kerr explained that current rules allow players to hit an opponent's arm once a shot is released. He noted that players tend to outsmart these rules and expressed confidence that changes will be made next year. "I'm very confident that next year the league will fix it because it's only a matter of time before somebody breaks a thumb or a hand or whatever," Kerr said.
Curry has been managing his thumb injury throughout the season by wrapping it and applying ice after games. Despite this precautionary measure, he maintains that his performance remains unaffected by the injury. The incident with Brooks has sparked discussions about whether such defensive tactics are fair play or require regulatory changes.
The ongoing debate highlights how players often adapt strategies within existing rules to gain an edge over opponents. As teams continue to seek competitive advantages, discussions around rule modifications are likely to persist in ensuring player safety without compromising game integrity.
