DAV Jalandhar lifts Nehru Champion Colleges trophy
New Delhi, Feb 17 (UNI) Riding on Sarwan Singh's brace, DAV Jalandhar outplayed Jawaharlal Nehru College Bhopal 3-0 to win the 14th SAIL-Nehru Champion Colleges Hockey tournament here today.
Besides the trophy, the victory fetched the winners a cheque of Rs 96,000 while the Bhopal college had to be content with Rs 64,000 prize money.
Earlier, Mahindra College Patiala overpowered a spirited Faculty of Humanity and Social Sciences, MGKV Varanasi 5-3 to claim the third place and a cheque of Rs 32,000. The Patiala side also earned Pepsi Penalty Corner award which earned them another cheque of Rs 20,000 In a fast paced final, the Jalandhar college led 1-0 at half time.
Rahul Bhardwaj put DAV Jalandhar ahead in the 32nd minute and three minutes into the second session Sarwan Singh captalised on a defensive lapse to shot home the second goal for the winners.
Sarwan struck his second and team's third goal in the 47th minute to seal the match and the title for his side.
For the third place match between Patiala and Varanasi teams, all the action came in the second half. The teams were levelled 1-1 at the lemon break.
For the Patiala college, D Bhargav and Satinder Singh scored two goals each while Amrinder Singh chipped in with one goal. For the losers, who took the lead but failed to hold on to it, the goal getters were Anand Shankar Pathak (two) and Rajesh Kumar (one).
The coaches of the winners (Gundeep Singh), runners-up (Habeeb Hassan) and third-placed (Hira Singh) teams received Rs 8,000, Rs 5,000 and Rs 3,000 respectively.
