CSA denies death threats, Smith says his remarks 'misconstrued'

Johannesburg, 10 May (UNI) Cricket South Africa (CSA) denied the Proteas had received any life-threatening calls following captain Graeme Smith's alleged comments about the team receiving death threats after the disappointing World Cup semi-final.

However, CSA media spokesperson Gordon Templeton said CSA had received calls from disappointed fans, but there were no death threats.

''Although some fans expressed their anger and disappointment, many fans welcomed the Proteas home, and expressed their support for the players,'' Templeton said.

Meanwhile, the South African skipper has clarified his comments made to a radio station, saying his remarks were 'misconstrued'.

Smith said ''I was referring to the reception India got when they returned home from the tournament and reports of incidences of violence that occurred in that country.

''CSA had received calls and emails from upset fans about the Proteas performance at the 2007 Cricket World Cup.

''You can imagine how we felt coming back home. It was a disappointing period for all of us and our fans. Right now we can only work on improving on the lessons and challenges learnt from our experience,'' the captain was quoted by 'Mail and Guardian'.

Smith also thanked all the supporters who backed the side.

''We would like to thank all our fans for supporting us throughout the season, which was one of the most successful in the Proteas history.'' UNI XC TB SAM VV1505
