Chennai division bags overall championship for women

Tiruchirapalli, Jan 12 (UNI) Chennai Division bagged the overall Championship for women by securing a grand total of 77 points in the 49th State-Level Republic Day Sports Meet 2006-07 held here today.

Sports Hostel Tirunelveli Division won the overall Championship for boys by securing 67 points at the end of the three-day event, organized by Department of School Education, Tamil Nadu.

In all, seven new meet records - boys four, and girls three records - had been created in the meet, which was conducted under three categories -- under-14, under-17 and under-19. Over 1,400 students, including 675 girls representing various schools from 16 divisions, had participated.

Distributing the prizes State School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu said the state government was taking all the necessary steps to introduce yoga in the school curriculum for the betterment of the students.

He pointed out that Tamil Nadu had bagged 23 gold medals, 22 silver medals and 26 bronze medals in various national-level events, held this year.
