Chandigarh to host Korfball Sub Jr Nationals and Fed Cup

Chandigarh, Apr 9 (UNI) The Federation Cup and the 8th Sub-Junior National Korfball Championships will be conducted by the Chandigarh Korfball Association at the Panjab University Campus here.

Chariman of the Organising Committee Prof R C Sobti, who is also Vice Chancellor of Panjab University, said that the all arrangements had been finalised for both Nationals competitions and various committees had been formed for the smooth conduct of the competitions.

Prof Sobti said that eight teams, including hosts Chandigarh would take part in the Federation Cup to be organised at the Panjab University Campus from May 24 to 26. Eight teams who have staked their claim for the top honours in the Federation Cup are Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Uttranchal and hosts Chandigarh.

Haryana will defend their title. Jammu and Kashmir had finished runners-up in the last edition of the Fed Cup in Rajasthan.

Chandigarh made their debut in Fed Cup last year and finished a creditable fifth.

Prof Sobti said that the Chandigarh Korfball Association would host the eighth edition of the Sub-Junior National Championship from June 11 to 16. Twenty-two states are expected to compete.

Confirmations have been received from Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chandigarh, Chattisgarh, Delhi, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttranchal, Manipur, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Goa, Tamil Nadu, Orissa and West Bengal.

Matches will be played on league-cum-knockout stage. Haryana are defending champions while Jammu and Kashmir are runners-up.

Announcing the formation of various committees, Organising Committee President Deepak Joshi said that the Sub-Junior Nationals and the Federation Cup Championships would be jointly conducted by the Chandigarh Korfball Association and the Panjab University Campus Sports under the auspices of the Korfball Federation of India. Joshi said that former Punjab Governor Maj Gen (Retd) B K N Chhiber had consented to be the patron of the Chandigarh Korfball Association.

Dr Dolly, Deputy Director, Panjab University Campus, has been appointed Organising Secretary of the National meets. Prof Naval Kishore, Dean Students Welfare, is the vice-chairman of the organizing committee.
