Chandigarh honours 5 players on National Sports Day

Chandigarh, Aug 29 (UNI) The Chandigarh Sports Department today honoured five international players on the occasion of the National Sports Day being celebrated here today in memory of Hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand.

Adviser to the Chandigarh Administrator, Lalit Sharma, presented cash awards to powerlifter Nirmaljit Singh, rower Manjeet Singh, powerlifter Husan Lal, spikers Balwinder Singh and Gurinder Singh.

Out of five recipients of the cash awards, only two were present.

The remaining players were honoured in absentia. Only Nirmal Jit and Gurinder Singh personally received the awards.

Nirmal Jit Singh had won gold medals in the Senior Asian Powerlifting Championship held at Almaty (Kazakhstan) in 2003.

Nirmal Jit Singh was presented a cheque of Rs 50,000.

Silver medal winner in the 12th Asian Junior Rowing Championship in 2006 in Singapore, Manjeet Singh was given a cash award of Rs 20,000.

Husan Lal, winner of bronze medal in the Senior Asian Powerlifting Championship in Seoul, also received a cheque of Rs 20,000.

Balwinder Singh and Gurinder Singh were members of the Indian team which won bronze medal in the 13th Asian Junior Men's Volleyball Championship in Teharan last year. They got Rs 10,000 each.
