Capt Kanwaljit calls for identifying sports talent in Punjab

Chandigarh, Apr 21 (UNI) Punjab Cooperation Minister Kanwaljit Singh today called for identifying the hidden talent among budding sports persons and their grooming by coaches in the state.

The state Education and Sports Departments need to share the greater responsibility in this regard in order to promote sports in the state, he said while releasing a book ''The Gems of World Hockey (Wishav Hockey De Hero) written by Mr Sukhwinderjit Singh Manouli.

He lamented that sports, particularly hockey which was once considered as a national game, was not showing the desired results and attributed the downfall of hockey to ''politicalisation'' of the sport. A policy was required to be framed by the Government so that unskilled sports persons did not become administrator of any sports federation, he added.

Capt Singh called upon game administrators and federations to take corrective steps to promote hockey in order to regain the lost glory of the game.

He congratulated the author for his contribution to the promotion of hockey game by bringing out the book.
