Bhopal's JNPG College records big win

New Delhi, Feb 10 (UNI) Bhopal's Jawahar Lal Nehru PG College and MGK Vidyapith, Varanasi, chalked out contrasting victories over their rivals to qualify for the quarter-finals of the 14th SAIL-Nehru Champion Colleges hockey tournament here today.

The Bhopal team outplayed Rourkela Municipal College 6-1 after leading 2-0 at the breather.

Irfan Ali (fifth, 50th), Osaf-ur-Rehman (40th, 59th) scored two goals each while Mazhar Kamal (seventh) and Shahbaz Khan (43rd) scored one each for the winners. Prasant Kiro reduced the margin for the losers in the 57th minute.

Faculty of Humanity and Social Science of MGK Vidyapith overpowered Gurukul Kangri, Haridwar, 2-1 after being levelled 1-1 at half time.

Ashish Kumar Singh put the Varanasi side ahead in the 14th minute but Rajender Yadav drew parity for Haridwar team in the 26th minute. Vineet Singh converted a penalty corner in the 51st minute and that turned out to be the winner for Vidyapith.

Earlier, Faculty of Arts and Education (Annamalainagar, TN) played a 1-1 draw with local challenger Kirori Mal College.

Kirori Mal took the lead through Naveen Kumar in the 15th minute but T Soumurak scored the equaliser for the visitors in the second session.
