Best combination against Sri Lanka as built up for World Cup
Kolkata, Jan 27 (UNI) The combination to play the four ODIs against Sri Lanka will be the first choice team for the World Cup in West Indies next month, chairman of selection committee Dilip Vengsarkar has said.
Talking to reporters, Vengsarkar said, ''Our best combination will play the four ODIs against Sri Lanka. It will be the side that will play in world cup.'' ''We would like to see them together before the Cup begins in the Caribbean,' he said.
Confirming that Sourav Ganguly would be rested, he said, ''We want to see Robin Uthappa play. Sourav will be rested in the Chennai ODI'' Last evening, Rahul Dravid confirmed that Ganguly, Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan were being rested for the Chennai ODI.
Ganguly who made a remarkable comeback in the Nagpur ODI would be rested after just two games.
He also confirmed that Virender Sehwag would have to wait some more time before getting a look in. ''Sehwag will have to wait for his chance. We are also looking at some more players,'' he said.
But if Sehwag is a certainty for the World Cup, then Vengsarkar does not have much time to see. The ODIs against Sri Lanka begin on February eight. But the Ranji One-dayers begin on Februray 11 and Delhi does not play before February 13.
So by then two ODIs between India and the Emerald Islanders would have been played.
Yuvraj Singh and Anil Kumble are set to make comebacks in Chennai. Yuvraj is returning from the ligament tear on his knee. He sounded confident during his last visit to the city last week.
''The runs will come from my bat once I am fully fit mentally and physically.
I will give a fitness report to John Gloster,'' he said and in his report he had made himself available for the ODIs.
Irfan Pathan will make a comeback for the last ODI in Vadodhara.
