Beating England will lift us for qualifiers says Iniesta

MADRID, Feb 8 (Reuters) Spain midfielder Andres Iniesta believes his side's 1-0 win over England in a friendly on Wednesday will give them a major confidence boost after their shaky start to Euro 2008 qualification.

''This was an important win for us, beating England will give us a lot of prestige especially as we did it away from home,'' the Barcelona midfielder told reporters after scoring the winner at Old Trafford.

''I think we played well and deserved the win, it will give us some extra confidence ahead of the qualifiers in March.'' Spain have made a poor start in their qualifying campaign and lie in fifth place in Group F, nine points behind leaders Sweden after winning one and losing two of their opening three matches.

They host second-placed Denmark at the Bernabeu on March 24 and play Iceland in Mallorca four days later.

Iniesta, who decided the game with a superb dipping shot from outside the area in the 63rd minute, said that if Spain replicated their England performance next month they would be back in the reckoning for Euro 2008.

''This game showed that we can beat anyone, although we shouldn't go mad just because we've won one game. If we remain focused and play the way we did here then the results will come. We just have to try and become more consistent.'' REUTERS SAM PM1854
