Bangladesh prodigy upset France GM
Kolkata, Feb 25 (UNI) Fide master Mehdi Hasan Parag of Bangladesh caused the biggest upset of the day when he got a quick victory against Grandmaster Oliver Renet of France in the first round of the Kolkata Open 07-Grandmaster Chess tournament being organised by Alekhine Chess Club here today.
Most of the other seeded players sailed through their games.
The Super Gransmasters Darmen Sadvakasov of Kazakhstan and Pantsulia Laven of Georgia carved out fine positional victories over their lower rated opponents IM Dinest Kumar Sharma and WGM Meenakshi Subbraman of India.
Fourth seeded Tigran Petrosian of Armenia also had an easy victory over IM Prathamesh Mokal of India.
In a couple of minor upsets the 10-year-old student of Goodrcke National Chess Academy Sayantan Das and Diptayan Ghosh drew against their more fancied opponents IM Rahul Shetty and BT Murali Krishnan respectively.
Players from Zambia, Sri Lanka and Nepal did not arrive leaving the final list of 86 players from 13 countries.
