Baichung-Barreto raise Rs 4 lakh 25 thousand in benefit match

Kolkata, Feb 10 (UNI) Barreto XI defeated Baichung XI by a solitary goal scored by the Brazilian himself in the Sudip Chatterjee-VP Satyan benefit match played at Howrah Stadium today.

Carlos Pereira-coached Barreto XI went past Subhas Bhowmick coached Bhaichung XI via a Jose Ramirez Barreto winner in the 14th minute of the match.

Dipak Mondal of Bhaichung XI was adjudged Man of the Match.

A sum of Rs 2 lakh each was handed over to the families of late Sudip Chatterjee and late VP Satyan. Rs 25,000 was given to noted referee Pradip Nag who is ill.

Ex-players Cheema Okorie and Jo Paul Ancheri also played in the match.

Later Baichung said, ''I am happy that we were able to raise the money for our senior pros. We are grateful to everyone who supported us in this effort.'' Assuring that such effort would continue in future also, he said, ''This is not the end.'' Then he added with a smile, ''The swadeshis have missed a lot of goals. We are keeping them for the NFL.''
