Australia set record Twenty/20 score against England

SYDNEY, Jan 9 (Reuters) Australia's batsmen went on the rampage against England today, racking up a record total of 221 for five in their Twenty/20 match at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Adam Gilchrist (48) and Ricky Ponting (47) smashed 69 runs off just 29 balls as Australia eclipsed the previous record of 214/5 for the most runs in an international Twenty/20 they set against New Zealand in Auckland in 2005.

Gilchrist's 29-ball innings featured two fours and five sixes -- including three in a row against James Anderson, whose four over costs 64 runs.

Ponting smacked three boundaries and two sixes in his 26-delivery knock, as well as sharing a 69-run stand with Gilchrist.

Cameron White (40 not out) and Andrew Symonds (39 not out) chipped in with an unbroken sixth wicket stand of 66 after Matthew Hayden made 20, Mike Hussey 18 and Michael Clarke five.

Monty Panesar was the best of the English bowlers taking two for 40 from his four-over spell, bowling Gilchrist then having Hussey stumped.
