Atwal misses season's first cut at Mayakoba Classic

Playa del Carmen, Mexico, Feb 24 (UNI) Arjun Atwal's inconsistent form once again got the better of him as he missed his first cut of the season at the three million dollar Mayakoba Classic after carding a nightmarish five-over 75 in the second round here.

The Orlando-based Indian, who was tied 14th overnight, ended up with four bogeys and a double bogey against two birdies to crash out of the event with a total of two-over 142.

The Indian struggled from the very start as he stumbled to bogeys on the second and fourth before recovering to fire a birdie on the ninth to make the turn one-over.

However, the ninth hole birdie turned out to be a false dawn for Atwal as he dropped a shot on the 10th. The horror run continued with another bogey on the 12th and a double bogey on the 14th.

Atwal dropped another shot on the 16th but managed to sign off on a bright note by sinking in a birdie on the 17th. However, the damage had been done as the former Asian Tour number one missed the cut by two shots on the Greg Norman-designed El Camaleon course.

At the top, American Boo Weekley fired two birdies in his last four holes as he moved into joint lead with a three-under 67.

Weekley has a two-round total of nine-under 131. Compatriot Cameron Beckman (67) shared the first spot with Weekley in the PGA Tour's first official money event to be staged on Mexican soil.
