Asian Wrestling Championships 55kg Greco-Roman: Lalit Aims For Gold In Bishkek
Lalit will fight for the men's 55kg Greco Roman gold at the Asian Wrestling Championships in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan on Tuesday, while Aman and Sunil Kumar stay in contention for bronze. The results capped a mixed first day for the Indian wrestlers in Greco Roman events across several weight divisions.
The 23-year-old former U-23 Asian Championships bronze medallist showed strong form in the semifinals. Lalit overpowered China's Huoying Shi with an 11-3 win, underlining control throughout the bout. The performance followed a bronze medal last month at the Muhamet Malo Wrestling meet, adding weight to hopes of a gold medal finish.

Lalit now meets Uzbekistan's Ikhtiyor Botirov for the 55kg Greco Roman title clash. Botirov, who claimed bronze at the 2025 Asian Championships, reached the final after defeating home wrestler Ulan Uulu 5-3 in the other semifinal. Both wrestlers arrive with recent continental success, setting up a competitive showdown in Bishkek.
In the 77kg Greco Roman category, Aman lost his semifinal to Zagreb Open gold medallist Ali Oskou of Iran by a 13-3 score. Earlier, Aman had overturned a 1-4 deficit to beat China's Halishan Bahejiang 6-4 in the quarterfinals. Aman will now wrestle South Korea's Yeonghun Noh in the bronze medal bout.
Asian Wrestling Championships Greco Roman results for other Indian wrestlers
Former 2020 Asian champion Sunil Kumar was defeated 8-0 by Gholamreza Farokhisenjani of Iran in the 87kg Greco Roman semifinal and will target bronze. In 65kg Greco Roman, Sunny Kumar lost in qualification to Kazakhstan's Saifulla Kurman and exited. Heavyweight wrestler Joginder Rathee fell in the 130kg Greco Roman quarterfinals to South Korea's Minseok Kim. Mirzazadeh of Iran then beat Kim in the semifinal, ending Rathee's repechage chances.
India will have another strong presence on the mats on Tuesday, with five Greco Roman wrestlers entering the Asian Wrestling Championships draw. Sahil (60kg), Sachin Sahrawat (67kg), Anil (72kg), Prince (82kg) and Nitesh (97kg) will all compete, adding to India's medal hopes alongside Lalit, Aman and Sunil Kumar.
