Army Red bt Indian Air Force 6-0 in inaugural match

Chandigarh, July 16 (UNI) The 55th Inter-Services Hockey Championship got underway here today with Army Red beating Indian Air Force 6-0 in the inaugural match.

The first goal for Army Red was scored by Ignace Tirkey in the 17th minute. In the 27th minute, D Mahadik converted a penalty corner to give the Army team a 2-0 lead. Eliazero Lakra was the top scorer for Army Red by scoring the 3rd, 4th and the 6th goal which came in the 33rd, 40th and 65th minute respectively. The fifth goal was scored by Rajesh Lakra by converting another penalty corner in the 47th minute.

The Army Red team got three penalty corners of which they converted two, while the IAF team was unable to convert any of its four penalty corners.

A total of four teams are participating in the championship.

Apart from the Indian Air Force and Indian Navy teams, the Indian Army is fielding two teams namely Army Red and Army Green. Army Red is the winner of the last edition of the championship held in January this year.

The aim of the championship is to select the services hockey team, which would subsequently participate in the national games and other championships.

Being conducted by 3 Base Repair Depot (3 BRD), Chandigarh on behalf of Air Force Sports Control Board under the aegis of Services Sports Control Board, the championship is being held as per the rules laid down by the International Hockey Federation and as adopted by the Indian Hockey Federation.
