Army inaugurates indoor stadium in Kashmir
Srinagar, Jan 17 (UNI) An indoor stadium with state-of-the-art gymnasium constructed by the Army under its 'Operation Sadbhavana'' has been inaugurated at Baramulla in north Kashmir, a defence spokesman said today.
He said the indoor stadium complex was half completed in 2001 and the project was suspended thereafter due to inadequate resources and funds from the Sports Authority of India (SAI).
The spokesman said the project was taken over by the Army's Daggar Division, based in Baramulla, in 2006. The partially built structure was repaired and upgraded with all facilities of a modern indoor stadium.
The complex, named as Jhelum stadium, has a badminton court with high quality wooden flooring, table tennis area, complete gymnasium, store-room, changing rooms for men and women, he added.
The spokesman said the facilities in the stadium would give an impetus to the sports activities in Baramulla district and promote sports culture in the region.
''By taking the initiative in development of sports facilities, the Daggar Division has fulfilled a long-pending demand of the locals,'' he added.
A friendly cricket match was organised on the occasion.
