Amla, Steyn make grade as CSA national contract players
Johannesburg, Mar 1 (UNI) Hashim Amla and Dale Steyn were upgraded as Cricket South Africa (CSA) national contracted players while 13 others got their contracts renewed for 2007-08 season.
This was announced by CSA CEO Gerald Majola, who said in a statement that Amla and Steyn had proved they had made successful advance from first class to international cricket.
''They have fitted very well into the Proteas' set-up and as young players they are very much part of our plans for the future.
''The other 13 players have had their contracts renewed following outstanding performances in both Test and ODI cricket during the past season.
''Under Graeme Smith's leadership, they have improved the Proteas' Test rankings and have jumped to the number one spot in the ODI world ratings.
''We have the fullest confidence in these 15 contracted players forming the basis of a highly successful 2007-08 season,'' Mr Majola said.
The duo join Graeme Smith, Shaun Pollock, Jacques Kallis, Mark Boucher, Makhaya Ntini, Herschelle Gibbs, AB de Villiers, Boeta Dippenaar, Andrew Hall, Justin Kemp, Charl Langeveldt, Andre Nel and Ashwell Prince as national contracted players.
Pace bowler Steyn has taken 42 wickets in 11 Test matches since his debut for the Proteas in 2004, and was on form in South Africa's most recent Test outing, bagging four for 87 in his sole appearance in a 2-1 series win against Pakistan.
Right-handed batsman Amla made his Test debut in 2004 and has racked up 616 runs in 13 matches at an average of 25.66 with one century and four half-centuries to his credit.
The only player not renewed contract is batsman Jacques Rudolph, who will join the first-class ranks on a full-time basis next season.
''Obviously, Jacques Rudolph's contract was not renewed as he has signed as a Kolpak player for the English county Yorkshire,'' the CSA CEO said.
