Algiers Afro-Asian Games postponed, organisers to decide new date
New Delhi, July 23 (UNI) The Afro-Asian Games, scheduled to start in Algerian capital Algiers on Thursday, has been postponed, apparently due to logistical problems.
''We have been informed about the postponment of the Games and we are disappointed by the developemnt,'' Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) Secretary General Randhir Singh told UNI today.
The Games involving two continents was to be held from July 26 to August 3.
Mr Singh said the organisers would decide on a future date for the Games and any possible change of venue.
''The Games will be held in Africa only and I am sure Africa will be able to find a venue soon,'' Mr Singh added.
''Indian Olympic Association (IOA) were to send 10 athletes from India and we were expecting good performance from them,'' said Mr Singh who is also the General Secretary, IOA.
IOA sources said that logistical problem was the main reason behind the posponment and Algiers was not in a position to host the Games involving the two continents three days after the All-Africa Games had ended in the Algerian capital.
There had been speculation of the postponment of the Games with reports pointing to lack of interest among top athletes to take part in it.
The inaugural Afro-Asian Games was held in Hyderabad in 2003 and it attracted around 2,000 competitors.
