Ace boxer Marykom eyes Gold in London Olympics

Hisar, Aug 26 (UNI) Three-time world and three-time Asian women boxing champion, Marykom was confident that India would shine in women boxing, to be included for the first time in London Olympics.

Padma Shree and Arjuna awardee Marycom, mother of twins, who is participating in the national coaching camp here, is thrilled that India has bagged first medal in boxing in Beijing and now would like to win the Gold in the newly Introduced category in Olympics.

''My country honoured me with Padma Shree and Arjuna award and to win Gold in the London Olympics is my sole goal now,'' she told UNI here.

The 26-year-old gritty Marycom, who has left her one-year-old sons back home in Vishakhapatnam to concentrate on the game, said ''Had they introduced women boxing in Beijing this time, we would have bagged at least two to three gold medals for sure. Now the Indian women would dominate in London,'' she claimed.

The game is now more a matter of tactical moves and confidence than just physical superiority, said Marycom, who weighs 46kg.

Marycom had started boxing at the age of 18 and is so dedicated to the game that she joined her tough training regime soon after delivery and used to carry her infants to the training camps.

Forty women boxers from all over the country are participating in the training camp here. The selected boxers would take part in the Witch International Cup at Hungary, Asian Boxing at Guwahati and World Sports at China in November.
