Aakash sets new U-18 national discus record

Chandigarh, Sep 26 (UNI) Aakash Antil of Haryana shattered the five-year old National discus record of Simranjit Singh (55.35m) by recording 56.36 m in the boys Under-18 category in the ninth North Zone Junior Athletics Championships at the Panjab Univeristy Campus here today.

Simranjit had established the previous national record in January 2002 in Chennai.

Shivam Singh of Uttar Pradesh recorded 54.68 metres for the silver medal. Virender Singh of Delhi took home the bronze medal with a throw of 48.30m.

It was the second national record during this meet. Yesterday, Delhi's thrower Ankita Julka created a national record (43.30 metres) for girls Under-18 in discus throw. D R Kannaujia of Uttranchal Pradesh won gold medal in 10,000 metres race for boys Under-18 by clocking 48:49.2s, while Manu Ram Patel of Uttar Pradesh got silver clocking 49:16.3 seconds.
