244 Sportsperson receive Diploma from NSNI
Patiala, May 13 (UNI) About 250 sportspersons received the Diploma in 17 sports disciplines at the graduation ceremony here at the Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports, the academic wing of Sports Authority of India.
Poonam Beniwal from boxing discipline, was most outstanding as she bagged the best woman student award as also the best student in sports sciences award, besides securing the highest marks in boxing with 75.038.
Poonam comes from a family which has a passion for boxing. Her father is a boxing coach in Hissar and her two sisters are also wellknown boxers. Poonam was the national boxing champion in 51kg weight category before joining the NIS as a trainee.
UGC Vice Chairman, Prof.Mool Chand Sharma, who gave away the Diplomas, said sports and physical education should be an integral part of our educational system.
The Executive Director of the Institute, Mr.Laxman Singh Ranawat informed the gathering that till date the NIS had produced 14992 coaches, excluding 542 from sixteen countries.
