Maharashtra to give Malleswari Rs 25 lakh
Mumbai: Maharashtra government will felicitate Karnam Malleswari, who on Tuesday became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic bronze medal, with Rs 25 lakh cash prize, minister of state for Sports and Information Publicity Anil Deshmukh said on Wednesday.
The state government already announced that it would honour any individual or team effort to win India a medal in the Sydney Olympics. Bronze medalists would get a prize of Rs 25 lakh, silver would get Rs 50 lakh and gold medal winners would get Rs one crore.
Mr Deshmukh congratulated Malleswari on her achievement. The felicitation ceremony would be a state function.
