Indian Post issues two stamps in Sydney
Sydney: As Indian athletes are busy strutting their stuff on various sports fields in Sydney Olympics, the Department of Posts, India have issued a set of four stamps to celebrate the Olympics spirit in a befitting manner of their own.
India's Union minister of state for Sports, Syed Shahnawaz Hussain issued Olympics stamps in a small function at Indian Post's exhibition stall at Sydney's Convention Tower on Sunday.
The four stamps feature colorful drawings of discus throw, hockey, tennis and women's weightlifting, which is making debut at Sydney, events.
"In the recent years, India have made some rapid development in information technology, nuclear science and industrial production and it would not be long before we repeat the same pace in sports too," the minister said while addressing the people gathered at the nearby Tourism India office.
The International Olympic Committee were represented by their philately chief Manfred Bergman, who appreciated Indian Post's effort and gesture. The director of India Post , Tilak De was also present on this occasion and he informed India Abroad News Service that India Post would be celebrating the golden jubilee of the Indian republic later this year by organising a philately exhibition named Indiepex Asiana 2000 in Calcutta.
This exhibition is being organized in Calcutta for the first time and would be held from December 7 to December 12.
Consul general of India in Australia, Vijay Kumar and regional director of Air India, Girishchandra Vyas were also present at the function to issue theOlympics stamps by India's union minister of state for Sports Syed Shahnawaz Hussain.
