In a grand show of power, skill, and resilience, India’s men’s team joined their female counterparts, who also won the Women’s title with a resounding 57-36 win over England in their final. For Indian fans, it was a perfect double delight.

The Format: Intense Competition from Start to Finish

The men’s competition featured ten teams divided into two groups of five. Each team played against all others in its group once, with the top four teams progressing to the quarter-finals. From there, it was a knockout battle: quarters, semis, third-place match, and the final.

The line-up included India, England, Italy, Scotland, Wales, Hungary, USA, Poland, Germany, and Hong Kong China. Group A featured Hungary, England, Poland, Germany, and the USA, while Group B included India, Italy, Scotland, Wales, and Hong Kong China.

Group A Results: England Dominate, Poland Strong

Group A saw England completely dominate with three wins out of three. Their crushing victories over Hungary (101-25), the USA (87-20), and Poland (61-36) showcased their superior form. Poland took second place with two victories, beating Hungary and the USA but falling short against England.

The USA managed one win against Hungary, but heavy defeats to England and Poland left them out of the running. Hungary, despite spirited efforts, ended without a win.

Group B: India and Scotland Shine

In Group B, India and Scotland remained unbeaten with three wins and one draw each. India opened their campaign with a 64-22 win against Italy and followed it up with wins against Hong Kong China (73-21), Wales (102-47), and a final tough battle against Scotland which ended in a 64-64 draw.

Scotland too made their mark with dominant performances over Wales (63-43), Italy (89-33), and Hong Kong China (70-28). Wales finished third with two wins, while Hong Kong China and Italy struggled throughout the tournament.

The grand finale on March 23 was a battle of grit and determination. England, cheered on by a packed Wolverhampton crowd, gave India a mighty scare. The match swung like a pendulum, with both teams exchanging leads throughout.

But India’s composure in the dying minutes made all the difference. Star raider Pawan Sehrawat said after the match, "We knew it would come down to the wire. England are a brilliant side, but we trust each other. The belief in the dressing room kept us calm."

Indian captain Deepak Niwas Hooda added, "This win is special. Winning outside Asia, against the home team, in a pressure situation, shows how far kabaddi has come. We dedicate this victory to our fans who never stop believing."
