Karunanidhi presents cash incentives to Kabaddi champion

Madurai, Oct 31 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today presented a cheque for Rs five lakh to S Kavitha, Vice-captain of the Indian team which emerged victorious in the second Asian Women Kabaddi Championship at Teheran in Iran.

Kavitha received the cash incentive from the Chief Minister at the Government Circuit House here. Mr Karunanidhi wished her that she should bring many more laurels to the nation.

Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority Member Secretary Atulya Misra and Madurai Amateur Kabaddi Association Secretary Solai Raja were also present on the occasion.

Hailing from a poor family, the Usilampatti-born Kavitha is a Police constable in Chennai.

Later, talking to UNI, Kavitha said she was happy to receive the cash incentive from the hands of the Chief Minister.

''I started playing kabaddi at the age of 13, when I was studying at I.H.M. School in Chennai. After completing B.A degree at Quaid-e-Millet College, I started playing national-level tournaments,'' she said.

Kavitha was thankful to the Kabaddi association and the Police department, which gave her good encouragement to participate in the six-nation Asian championship from October 16 to 21.
