Kabaddi becoming popular in Britain

London, Aug 27: The Indian game, Kabadi that was taken to Britain by immigrants from south Asia is gaining popularity in the country.

While kabaddi clubs were formed in 1969 in Birmingham, Blackburn and Bradford, the game grabbed attention during early 1990s through a weekly Channel 4 show.

Now due to the growing interest in the south Asian community as well as some local communities like the police forces the team game sees a sudden surge in popularity.

With this kind of interest in the game, a a local organisation, Youth Action at Hyndburn in Lancashire has been reportedly given a grant of 1000 pounds to popularise the game in schools in central Accrington, say reports.

"We are extremely pleased to have been successful in this bid. We are trying to offer alternative sports rather than the usual football," Lucy Hamlin of Youth Action and Hyndburn was quoted as saying.
