Olympics 2024: Tough Pool B Challenges Await India In Paris Olympics
India's men's hockey team kicks off their Paris Olympics campaign with a challenging match against New Zealand on Saturday. Positioned in a tough 'pool of death,' the team aims to surpass their previous bronze medal achievement from the last edition.
Forward Mandeep Singh emphasized the importance of a strong start: "New Zealand is a tough team, and we will try to make more and more PCs and we want to score goals on the PC. Even if we don't score goals on the field, we will make sure to convert goals from penalty corners. We know that our PC is good. Harmanpreet Singh and Amit Rohidas are our best drag flickers. We are confident that we will make a PC. It is our plus point." Mandeep told to NNIS Sports.

India’s historic bronze medal in Tokyo ended a 41-year drought, raising expectations for the team. Midfielder and former captain Manpreet Singh, who will be playing his fourth Olympics, reflected on the team's mindset "This time, we are seeing the Olympics the way we saw them last time. We should not underestimate any team. Whether we play against New Zealand or Australia, our mindset should be the same—we should strive to win. Whichever team comes to the Olympics, it has to give 100%, and our aim is to overcome each match one by one. We want to change the color of the medal, but we have to take small targets; it's like overcoming hurdles."
In a tough Pool B, India faces Belgium, Australia, Argentina, New Zealand, and Ireland. Securing back-to-back podium finishes is a formidable task, but the team remains optimistic. Midfielder Samsher Singh noted, "We have to give 100% in the first match. It is not easy in the first match. In the Olympics, everything starts in the first match. We have to analyze our strategy and do well."
India's initial pool matches against New Zealand, Argentina, and Ireland are crucial for securing maximum points before facing tougher opponents Belgium and Australia. A win against New Zealand could set a positive tone for the rest of the tournament.
