Indian men's U-21 hockey team are playing for a spot in the semifinal as they face Netherlands in a title knockout encounter at the Malaysia National Hockey Stadium in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday (December 12).
The Uttam Singh-led side finished second in Pool C behind Spain after defeating South Korea and Canada in the tournament, which got underway on December 5 in Malaysia.
Araijeet Singh Hundal and Rohit have been the leading goalscorers for the side with three goals each. Lanky forward Araijeet Singh, who also played the previous Men's FIH Junior World Cup 2022 in South Africa, scored a hat-trick against South Korea in India's opening pool match while Rohit, Aditya Lalage, Amandeep Lakra bagged a brace each in the final pool match against Canada, who were mauled 10-1.
The victory was crucial as it also took India to the quarterfinals after they were left in a spot of bother by Spain, who dominated every aspect of their game to beat them 4-1 in the second pool match. However, the result also denied an India vs Pakistan encounter had India topped the Pool. Spain will face Pakistan later today in the other semifinal at 3:30 PM IST.
Netherlands, on the other hand, topped Pool D while eliminating the likes of New Zealand (3-1) and Belgium (5-3). The victories for the Dutch came after they played out an entertaining 3-3 draw against Pakistan.India vs Netherlands squad
