DAVC Jalandhar enters Nehru hockey semis
New Delhi, Feb 16 (UNI) Jawaharlal Nehru PG College, Bhopal and DAV College Jalandhar set up a summit clash after registering emphatic wins in their respective semi-final matches at the SAIL-Nehru Champion Colleges hockey tournament here today.
The Bhopal team beat Government Mahindra College, Patiala 3-0, while former champions DAV College trounced Faculty of Humanity and Social Sciences MGKV, Varanasi 4-0 to advance to the final to be played tomorrow.
In the first semi-final, the Bhopal side were relentless in their attacks and took lead in the 22nd minute when Irfan Ali converted a penalty corner. Osaf-ur-Rehman scored another in the 33rd minute as Jawaharlal Nehru PG College went into breather 2-0 up.
Shahbaz hit the final nail in the coffin with a 63rd minute strike.
In another semi-final, DAV College were held well by the Varanasi squad for 25 minutes before Kuljinder converted a penalty corner to open the floodgates.
Ravinder Singh doubled the lead three minutes later while Onkar Singh scored on the either side of the lemon-break -- 30th and 47th minute -- to make it 4-0.
The Patiala and Varanasi sides play each other tomorrow for a third place play off.
