Asom thrash Tamil Nadu to reach hockey semifinals
Guwahati, Feb 12 (UNI) Hosts Asom created a history of sorts when they beat fancied Tamil Nadu 6-2 to reach the semifinals in the hockey event of the 33rd National Games here today.
Even more shocking was the convincing margin the spirited home team defeated their rivals.
Asom dominated the proceedings from the beginning and India international Samir Dad gave the hosts an early lead but Tamil Nadu drew parity soon. However, there was no stopping the Asom players as they pumped in two more goals to lead by 3-1 at the breaktime.
The second half witnessed some interesting moments as Tamil Nadu mounted pressure to reduce the deficit but Asom footballers exhibited better speed and control and netted three more goals against the opponent's one to seal their opponent's fate and finish the match 6-2.
Tamil Nadu earned two penalty corners, but failed to find the target on both occasions while Asom converted the lone penalty corner that came their way.
Asom had in its first match shocked heavy weight Punjab 5-3 and was boosted by the presence of seven Manipuri players who played with short pass and sprint to their advantage.
