Jim Ratcliffe States He Lacks Authority Over Erik Ten Hag's Future At Manchester United
Jim Ratcliffe, co-owner of Manchester United, has clarified that he does not have the authority to decide the future of manager Erik ten Hag. This comes amid a challenging start to the season for the team. United have only managed seven points from their first six Premier League matches, securing victories against Fulham and Southampton but suffering heavy 3-0 defeats at home to Liverpool and Tottenham.
The current performance mirrors their worst start in any Premier League season, similar to those under David Moyes in 2013-14 and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2020-21. In European competitions, United drew 1-1 with Feyenoord at home and let a 2-0 lead slip in a 3-3 draw against Porto. These results have led to significant criticism directed at Ten Hag.

Despite the pressure on Ten Hag, Ratcliffe emphasized that decisions about his future rest with the club's new football hierarchy. When asked about his confidence in Ten Hag, who recently renewed his contract, Ratcliffe told BBC Sport: "I don't want to answer that question. I like Erik. I think he's a very good coach but at the end of the day it's not my call."
The responsibility for making key decisions lies with Manchester United's management team, which has been together since June or July. This team includes CEO Omar Berrada and sporting director Dan Ashworth, who both joined in July. They are still settling into their roles and need time to evaluate and make informed choices.
Ratcliffe stated that their goal is clear: "Our objective is very clear—we want to take Manchester United back to where it should be, and it's not there yet, obviously—that's very clear." The focus remains on restoring the club's former glory.
Upcoming Challenges
United's next Premier League match is against Aston Villa on Sunday. Historically, they have won 40 league games against Villa, with only one other opponent being beaten more frequently by them (41 times against Everton). Villa has struggled at home against United, winning just once in their last 25 encounters.
This solitary victory came under Unai Emery's leadership in November 2022 when Villa triumphed 3-1. As Manchester United aim to improve their standing this season, they face significant challenges ahead.
