Steve Waugh to mentor Socceroos' ahead of Asian Cup
Sydney, June 20 (UNI) The Socceroos' are all set to rope in the services of former Australia skipper Steve Waugh ahead of their Asian Cup final, as national coach Graham Arnold believes the cricket legend's vast experience of playing in 'hot-bed' sub-continent environments will be of immense help to his players for the next month's tourney.
Arnold, who is famous for his out-of-the-box thinking, held talks with Waugh yesterday in a bid to draw on his vast experience on how to handle the culture and physical aspect of playing in Asia.
''It is something I have had in the back of my mind for some time now. We all know about Steve's character and determination and how he adapted to all sorts of conditions during his career.
''He was always fantastic in Pakistan and especially in India because he understood the culture and the conditions,'' Arnold was quoted as saying by 'The Australian'.
''He always embraced it rather than hid from it like some sportspeople tend to do when they are in a totally foreign and intimidating environment.'' Interestingly, the 42-year-old Aussie skipper's involvement with the Socceroos was mooted just before their recent friendly against Uruguay but did not come to fruition that time.
As the Socceroos will be up against intimidating conditions in terms of heat, playing conditions, food and fanatical fans during their next month's sub-continent venture, Arnold seemd certain that Waugh's vital inputs regarding how to get involved with the fans and culture of countries like India, will certainly provide the Socceroos the best possible chance of winning the Asian Cup.
The Socceroos will be initially based in Bangkok and depending on their progress, they could play in Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia.
