Simeone Criticises Referee For Disallowing Alvarez's Penalty In Champions League Exit
Diego Simeone expressed his anger over the referee's decision to disallow Julian Alvarez's penalty during Atletico Madrid's Champions League exit against Real Madrid. The match ended in a 2-2 aggregate draw, with Real advancing after a 4-2 shootout win. Alvarez slipped, and VAR noted his left foot touched the ball before his right kick, leading to the penalty being voided.
Simeone was dissatisfied with referee Szymon Marciniak’s call, stating he hadn't seen clear evidence of Alvarez touching the ball twice. "The referee said when Julian got to the penalty spot he touched the ball with his standing foot, but the ball did not move," Simeone told reporters. "I've never seen the VAR called to review a penalty in a shootout... Never."

This marks Atletico's fifth elimination by Real Madrid in Champions League knockout stages, including finals. Only Bayern Munich has been ousted more frequently by one team, also Real Madrid, seven times. Despite this setback, Simeone remains proud of his players and hopes for a quick recovery as they face Barcelona in LaLiga soon.
The upcoming LaLiga clash is crucial as only one point separates Spain’s top three clubs. Barcelona leads with 57 points, ahead of second-placed Real Madrid on goal difference, while Atletico sits third with 56 points. Barcelona also has a game in hand over both rivals.
Simeone acknowledged that recovering from such a loss isn't easy but emphasized their determination against Barcelona. "We'll see if this defeat will cost us moving forward," he said. He noted that despite fatigue from their recent match, they would give their all on Sunday.
Reflecting on the evening, Simeone mentioned that fans left disappointed but aware of the team's effort. "Our fans went home annoyed, but knowing that their team gave their all," he stated. Although defeated, he felt at peace due to the team's commendable performance.
